Electric cars are becoming increasingly familiar on Malaysian roads, but the idea of owning one can still come with plenty of questions. How practical is it for everyday driving? How much space does it have? Can it handle the daily commute and longer highway trips without feeling like a compromise?
The JAECOO J5 EV arrives with a fairly straightforward answer: an electric SUV should fit naturally into everyday life without asking drivers to completely change the way they live.
As JAECOO Malaysia’s first fully electric model, the J5 EV combines the familiar proportions of a compact SUV with an all-electric powertrain, a technology-rich cabin and plenty of practical touches. It is also positioned as a more premium take on the B-segment electric SUV, bringing features that would feel at home in a vehicle from a class above.
Electric Performance That Feels Effortless
Under the floor and driving the front axle, the J5 EV uses a 155 kW electric motor producing 288 Nm of torque. That translates into a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 7.7 seconds.
For Malaysian driving, the appeal is less about chasing numbers and more about how that instant electric torque feels when pulling away from traffic lights or merging onto a busy highway. There is no need to wait for an engine to build revs. Power arrives smoothly and immediately, giving the J5 EV a responsive character that suits stop-start urban driving.
The 58.9 kWh CATL LFP battery provides up to 402 km of WLTP-rated range. That gives the J5 EV enough flexibility for regular city commutes, errands around town and longer weekend drives without making every journey feel like a charging exercise.
When charging is needed, the J5 EV supports up to 130 kW DC fast charging, taking the battery from 30% to 80% in around 28 minutes under the stated conditions. It also supports up to 11 kW AC charging for overnight or longer charging sessions at home.
Designed Around Real Life
A good electric SUV needs to be more than an EV. It still needs to work as a family car, shopping companion, commuter and occasional road-trip vehicle.
Space is another area where the J5 EV proves its worth. There are 480 litres of boot space, while a 35-litre frunk adds another useful storage area. Fold the rear seats down and total cargo capacity increases to as much as 1,284 litres. That gives the J5 EV plenty of flexibility for groceries, luggage, sports equipment or the assortment of things that somehow always ends up travelling in an SUV.
The cabin follows the same practical approach, with features such as dual-zone climate control, ventilated front seats and a large 1.45m² panoramic glass roof. Double-glazed front side windows also help create a quieter cabin, adding to the more upmarket feel expected from a premium electric SUV.
Technology Without Making Things Complicated
Technology is another area where the J5 EV makes its case.
At the centre of the dashboard is a 13.2-inch 2K infotainment display, while the vehicle comes equipped with Level 2+ Advanced Driver Assistance Systems featuring 19 standard safety and driver-assistance functions. There is also a 540-degree HD surround-view camera, which can be particularly useful when navigating tight parking spaces and crowded urban areas.
Then there are the features that are a little less expected.
The J5 EV gets dedicated Pet Mode and Camping Mode, while its 3.3 kW Vehicle-to-Load capability allows the car to supply power to compatible electrical devices. For a weekend outdoors, that could mean powering small appliances or equipment directly from the vehicle rather than treating the SUV purely as a way to get from A to B.
A Premium Feel, Without Losing Its Everyday Character
Visually, the J5 EV keeps the confident SUV proportions of the J5 family while giving the front end a cleaner electric identity. The closed-off grille and active grille shutter are subtle changes, but they help distinguish the EV while also supporting aerodynamic efficiency.
More importantly, the overall package does not feel designed purely around the idea of being an electric vehicle. It remains an approachable SUV with familiar practicality, comfortable proportions and technology that serves a clear purpose.
That balance is perhaps the most interesting part of the JAECOO J5 EV. It brings together the advantages of electric driving - quiet operation, instant response, and fewer moving parts - with the versatility people already expect from an SUV.
For Malaysian roads, where the daily routine can involve congested city streets one moment and open highways the next, that combination makes plenty of sense.
The J5 EV is ultimately less about making a statement that it is electric, and more about showing how naturally an EV can fit into everyday life. Book a test drive today.
